Hey! You Can't Wear That

Michael Jeffries’ view is very wrong. Abercrombie and Fitch is a clothing brand. The message that Michael Jeffries’ is sending to young people is very negative. His comments make people feel worthless. They don’t want “fat kids” to be part of Abercrombie and Fitch, which is thought of to be the “popular crowd”. He talks about how in schools, there are always the cool kids and the not-so-cool kids. It is ideal for one to want to try to go after the cool kids. He believes that many people are not “worthy enough” to wear their clothing, and they will never be worthy enough. Only the cool kids can wear their brand. They sell clothes. Why do they have to make people feel bad about the way that their bodies look

It is definitely not fair to target a particular group of teens because teens are very insecure about themselves to begin with. Pointing out the flaws of teens makes them feel that they aren’t good enough and that they should change so they can “fit in”. Many teens struggle through everyday life because they don’t or can’t be or look like what everyone wants to see. Teens are very vulnerable because their bodies are changing and they may not be comfortable in their own skin.
This is a very big contribution to the biased perception of what beauty is. Society has painted a picture of what ‘beautiful’ is. No one really notices the beauty of the little things because society claims those to be ‘ugly’. To be honest, everyone is beautiful and should be commended on all their good traits. It’s nice to look at their good traits because it’s better than always being put down because of one flaw. The public is so worried about looks that we have lost interest in all the true beauty of things.

On a Tweet and a Prayer

In my opinion, having twitter accounts will not help attract youth to take on a bigger role in the life of the church. Some youth won’t take these twitter accounts seriously considering that they don’t actually know if a church leader is writing them. The youth is not used to seeing Church leaders tweeting because they never grew up with it. These tweets would be more effective with the younger generation that are only starting to get in involved with social media.
Having Church leaders tweet does have some advantages, but they also have some disadvantages. These tweets by Church leaders allows young people know what’s going on considering that twitter is used by 140 million people. Since it is used by so many people, it is a good way of send messages and informing people of things happening in the world. A disadvantage would be if the accounts of these Church leaders get hacked. People could alter the things they say and give false information to their followers.

The parish that I am part of does not take part in the world of social media. They make announcements before the mass and through the weekly bulletin that is give out.

To encourage the youth to become more active people in the Church, there are many things that can be done. Firstly, the Church could put together several outreaches in a community. These outreaches could be to paint someone’s window or visiting a retirement home. The church could also set a time where kids can come to the church to get help from others, especially the young people. Doing these things for the church could also help the young people in school. In order to graduate, they must get forty hours of community service. By being involved in the church, they could easily earn those forty community service hours. If they enjoy volunteering, they will continue even though they are done their hours.

Social Media – The Good, The Bad and the 'Not-So-Private'

I am a part of a social networking website. It allows me to communicate with my friends and family that I do not see too often. An example would be if I wanted to wish my cousin happy birthday, I wouldn’t have to pick up the phone, I could just send them a quick message on Facebook.

When I first made my twitter account for example, I made sure that not just anyone could see what I was saying. Right now, my twitter account is still private so that only people that I allow to follow me can see what I tweet.

I make sure not to post where I am, my age, the school I go to etc. Even though my account is protected, I don’t want to take a chance. Sometimes it’s hard not to mention these types of information online but that just goes to show how aware you must be when using social networking websites.

Things such as your first name, hobbies, and your age are examples of information that are quite safe to post. Things that aren’t safe to post are information such as your last name, your date of birth, any credit card information, your school etc. It is important not to post these types of information online. Allowing others to see this can harm you in many ways.

To become more responsible users of social networking websites, we must remember that the words and images that we post on the internet can be available for many years. Your future employers, school admission officials, identity thieves, spammers and stalkers could also see this information. It is important to watch what we post online because it could possible affect our futures tremendously.

Twitter Trouble!!

Khadijah’s comments about her teacher were not appropriate. The things that she said about her teacher may make others not take him seriously. She meant to say these things to hurt him. These qualities about her teacher may or may not be true. There is nothing wrong with eating fish sticks for dinner but Khadijah may think it is childish. Fish sticks are food so why is it so bad to eat them? That is only my opinion but someone may think otherwise.

The suspension of these students was appropriate. Two students got seven-day suspensions and were also removed from the classes of the teachers that were named in their tweets. Others got two-day suspensions, two students who participated in the discussion online received a warning, and the other two were back in school but had to write apology letters. Some students said more than others therefore those students had a tougher punishment. Those students that said less things had a lighter punishment. The school board was reasonable to enforce such a punishment because this allows the students to know that there are consequences to their actions.

It is good for students to share their opinions freely but not when they hurt others. They could talk to their friends or family about how they feel. They should not post this sort of thing online because they it allows for others, that do not actually know what is really happening, to join the conversation. Those people end up getting in trouble as well. This situation would be a good example. The students that probably did more had a tougher punishment (7-day suspensions) compared to those students that had lighter punishments (received a warning for their actions) who probably didn't do as much but were still part of it in some way.
